Sand filters remove impurities from the water by using sand to attract and collect the debris. Sand filters must be backwashed (running water through the filter in reverse) to unload the dirt to waste. This is a manual process that is performed every few weeks. Sand filters trap debris as small as 20 to 40 microns.
