Top mount sand filters require a top mount multi-port backwash valve.
Many side mount sand filters can use either a side mount multi-port valve or a slide valve for backwash purposes. It is recommended to match the manufacturer of the backwash valve to the manufacturer of the pool filter. This will assure the backwash valve will mount properly to the top of the filter in the case of a top mount valve, or will match up to the filter bulkhead connection fittings in the case of a side mount valve.
